Ken Buckley: A True Gentleman

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ken Buckley, a very popular member of the West Warwick’s club for over 20 years. Ken passed away on the 24th August 2021.

Ken loved his bowls and was well loved and respected. He was a formidable opponent on the green, playing indoor rink bowls but mostly Crown Green where Ken always made people feel welcome.

Ken also loved his football and used to boast that as a young man he could kick a wet football ball from one end of the pitch to the other (no doubt). Ken was a great family man and never missed an opportunity to talk about his wife and family with admiration and pride.

Ken Buckley was a true gentleman who will be greatly missed by all who where lucky enough to have met him.

His funeral will take place at 11.00 am on Tuesday 14th September at Robin Hood Cemetery then after the service at West Warwick’s Sports Club.

Brian (Buster) Chilwell

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Brian Chilwell. A popular personality around the West Warwicks Club for many years, he was loved as a friend by many members young and old alike. He was affectionately known to everyone as Buster.

For many years Buster was a key member of the Bowls Section, captaining the team to many successes including another League Championship in his final season as Captain. Such was his enthusiasm and commitment to the club, he also performed many other roles such as: Treasurer, Chairman and Fundraiser. He joined the team many years ago when the bowling green was sited where the new build houses now stand and before the club was modernised.

Always a very sociable man with a large family, Buster always supported club entertainment functions and was always first in line to secure tickets for him and his family and friends.

A keen footballer in his youth and a Blues supporter, he often regaled us with tales of his prowess as a goalkeeper, and although all who knew him considered him a gentle giant, he must have indeed presented an intimidating sight when advancing on attacking forwards! His other great passion was fishing and there were many stories of his legendary fishing holidays to Ireland with his friends.

The other great passion for Buster was his total devotion to his family, he spent many years as a carer for his mother until she passed and was greatly loved by all his family members. His family will mourn his loss very deeply.

Please raise a glass or say a prayer in memory of a true gentleman who will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.

End of season round up – 2019

The West Warwicks bowlers enjoyed a very successful 2019 season. Under Club Captain Brian ‘Buster’ Chilwell the team lifted the Business Houses league title by a considerable margin helped by some exceptional teams results and a clutch of outstanding individual performances over the season.

Here’s the final league table:

To indicate how well the team performed collectively and individually the league individual averages table was dominated by West Warwicks players with seven players featuring in the top 20 league performers. Notably topping the averages our own Graham Holder, with Andy Taggart in 2nd place. Our most improved player Alan Miller finished in 4th place with Andrew Taggart in 6th place. Jim Ridley finished in 9th place, with Ken Buckley in 11th place and Bernie Seery in 14th place.

A special mention also needs to go to Brian Dudley our oldest player at 90 years old, who again had a great season. He showed great skill and determination to come out on top in many crucial games, both at home and away. Long may he continue.

The players would also like to extend their thanks to Brian ‘Buster’ Chilwell who after many successful years as Club Captain has decided to stand down, he remains as Treasurer. Jim Seery will take over as Captain for the coming season.

Buster finished on an amazing high and anyone will have a hard job to match or exceed those achievements and contributions he has made to the bowls club over the years. He has worked tirelessly for years raising funds and organising functions to raise money.

West Warwicks Bowls Club also finished a creditable 4th in the East Birmingham Tuesday Evening Bowls League.

The new Bowls season fixtures were due to start on the 4th April 2020 with West Warwicks playing our first fixture is on Saturday 25th April Vs The Old Cross at home. Unfortunately due to efforts to contain the spread of Coronavirus, the start of the season has been postponed until further notice.

Previous, to the Coronavirus crisis, we had also been hoping to open the green before the end of March and also to complete the erection of the clubhouse and other essential works. As soon as we are able to resume, we’ll get on to this and also hold some Open Days for new members, where anyone wishing to learn the game is welcome to come along and join us. For the moment however, in line with advice from the government West Warwickshire Sports Complex is closed.

Please keep yourselves healthy and as soon as the current health crisis has passed we’ll be up and running again. Watch this space for updates…..
